The Super Dentists, a dental group specializing in orthodontic and pediatric care for children, teens and adults, has donated six flat-screen televisions to help support the dental facility at San Ysidro Health Center (www.syhc.org) (SYHC). The gift, according to Drs. Nazli Keri and Dr. Kami Hoss, support SYHC’s mission to provide low cost, high quality, comprehensive primary care services to low income families.
“Being a specialist in pediatric dentistry,” said Dr. Keri, “we provide a positive experience for children from various socio-economical levels that have different amount of apprehension about going to the dentist. At The Super Dentists we see how much more of a positive experience it can be for children to watch TV during treatment. The TV’s that we donated will help alleviate some of the fear some children may have and instead increase dental health awareness as they develop into adolescence.”
Dr. Hoss who, with Dr. Keri, recently visited SYHC, added, “We understand the challenges a non-profit organization faces to support this mission. We saw firsthand how SYHC strives to improve the health and well being of community’s traditionally underserved and culturally diverse people.” Dr. Hoss noted that the goal of the flat-screen televisions donation was to help SYHC’s young dental patients experience a more relaxing and stress-free environment as they await their dental appointment.
Perla Johnson, whose daughter is a patient at SYHC’s dental clinic, stated, “I have brought my daughter once before to see the dentist a couple of months ago. It was stressful and a difficult situation for her. I knew I had to bring her back because I care about her oral health, so I made another appointment. This time the experience was so much different. She did not cry or move at all. The difference the TV monitor made was so impressive.”
Keith Aderman, President of Mr. Hookup Architectural Electronics, a company that specializes in installing electronic entertainment systems in dental offices, said, “For years, I have wanted to install TVs as a charitable contribution, in a clinic that provided affordable dental care to under-privileged children. When I got a call from Dr. Hoss about installing ceiling TVs in six operatories of the San Ysidro Health Center’s Dental Clinic, I was excited about the opportunity to collaborate on the project. I committed to providing all of the materials at my cost, and donated over 96 hours of our technicians’ labor for the installation. Aderman commented, “As a person who suffered from dental anxiety as a child, the smile on these children’s faces is a priceless reward for our contribution”
Dr. Sergio Cuevas, SYHC’s dental director, noted that Dr. Keri and Dr. Hoss were introduced to SYHC last year when they visited the Center’s Maternal and Child Health Center in San Ysidro. “They were extremely impressed,” said Dr. Cuevas, and believed that the addition of televisions would help with our mission to educate to our community while, at the same time, providing entertainment and a relaxing diversion to our young children waiting to see a dentist.” He added, “It is amazing how the TV’s offer behavior management, which allows our staff to focus on dental care. It is impressive to see how these gifts instantly decrease a child’s dental fear and apprehension.”
